The project was about creating six MOCA mailers using the principles learned from VISCOM 100. I tried my best to use The Rule of Thirds, Focal Points, White Space, Balance, Type, etc. I had to place words in certain positions, and I had to use different font types, sizes and colors while following the above mentioned concepts. There are a total of six artboards we used with different styles. The MOCA logo had to stay in its original form. However, the teacher allowed us to change its color and size. Also, the instructor allowed her students to change the color of the background. The mood of the mailer depended on the artist we chose. I picked Hank Willis Thomas because of what he represented. The student had to research the artist as well. I did not go in-person to see my artist’s design. The student had the option to go to MOCA in-person to research the artist of his or her choice or online. I chose to see it online.
I feel I was able to achieve what was asked of me. However, it was not easy. I had many sketches I drew. I had to think, think, think, and think about how I wanted my mailer to look. I still made mistakes, but I learned from making errors and correcting them. I also had a caring instructor that let her students resubmit their work multiple times. I resubmitted my work three times. Lastly, using the concepts I mentioned in the first paragraph was fun. I learned a lot, and I still need to educate myself to learn how to be a great graphic designer.
